Pacific Economic Bulletin Volume 22 Number 1 March 2007 © Asia Pacific Press Scholars have questioned the long-term sustainability of MIRAB microstates in a debate that cannot be settled without recourse to a detailed examination of the magnitudes and trends involved. This paper adds to the small but growing empirical literature on this issue with an investigation of migration patterns and associated remittances in the case of Tuvalu. Stephen Boland is a freelance economist with experience in public finance development projects in the Pacific microstates of Tuvalu and Marshall Islands.
